Scholarship Application Information

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PERIOD IS NOVEMBER 1 - JANUARY 31 EACH YEAR
SCHOLARSHIPS WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON OR BEFORE JULY 1

Since 1993, Cancer for College, a registered 501(c)3 charitable foundation, has provided hope and inspiration to cancer survivors in the form of college scholarships. Applicants are not discriminated against based on sex, race or religious belief. Community college applicants are eligible but award may not be greater than the amount needed.  All remaining applicants will be eligible for other one-time awards. Awards are typically $5,000 each. Scholarship recipients must maintain full-time enrollment at his/her stated university. Failure to maintain full-time enrollment or transfer from a 4-year university to a community college may result in loss of scholarship funds. Scholarship recipients experiencing health-related issues that force them to leave school may request a one-time extension of their scholarship, not to exceed one school year. Recipients exceeding this time will forgo their scholarship, but may reapply when ready to return to school.

​PLEASE READ THE DIRECTIONS CLOSELY AS YOU GO THROUGH THE APPLICATION.

ITEMS YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW OR HAVE AVAILABLE FOR UPLOAD:

1. The first two pages of the appropriate 2017 tax return :
If you are under 25 and claiming to be independent, you will need to provide your parents returns to show that they do not claim you.

  • Your parents’ 2017 tax return (jointly or individually based on filing status) if you are claimed as a dependent.
  • Your personal 2017 tax return if you are independent.
  • If you do not file a tax return, you must upload proof of any income such as SSI, W-2, Snap Benefits or other written documentation.


2. Letter of Good Standing from the University you are attending 
*only applicable if you are in college when you apply

3. Two-years of Academic Transcripts (High School, College or Combination depending on your year in school)
* These can either be requested via email that is submitted through the application or personally uploaded if you already have copies.

4. Confirmation of Diagnosis Letter
(Must be completed on medical letterhead by your oncologist, primary care physician or nurse)
* This can either be requested via email that is submitted through the application or personally uploaded if you already have a copy.

5. Two Letters of Recommendation from two people OUTSIDE your family.
* These can either be requested via email that is submitted through the application or personally uploaded if you already have copies.

6. Total Annual Cost of Attendance
(This is a number published by your college or university, This includes tuition, room & board, books, etc.)
​*This is the annual cost to attend.  Not the cost for 4 years of attendance.

2019 SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR APPLICATION

GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP

  • Open to any cancer survivor who is enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States.
  • Applicant must be a full time student.
  • Applicant must be a resident of the United States.


CAROLINAS SCHOLARSHIP
In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must either be from or attending school in the states of North or South Carolina.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST SCHOLARSHIP
In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must either be from or attending school in the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, or Montana.

SPECIALIZED SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarships are open to students who qualify based on the criteria specific to each scholarship. They may be regional and may require an additional essay.

CHERRY HAWK SCHOLARSHIP
In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must be from or attending school in southern California.

DEAR JACK SCHOLARSHIP
In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must be a music major or related field of study with an ability to express how you plan to pursue music as a career.

FRANK THE TANK SCHOLARSHIP
Created by Cancer for College Scholarship recipient Frank Lozoya.
​In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must be attending, or planning to attend, California State University, Fullerton.

HENRY STREULI SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is in memory of Henry Joseph Streuli and will be awarded to a student who will use their education to advance a world that is filled with Henry's love of life.  In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must either be from or attending school in the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, or Montana.

LEONARD FAMILY ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIP
In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must be a business major or related field with a desire to pursue a career in the food service industry, and potentially own and operate a restaurant.


ROSS SKELTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Created in memory of Ross Skelton to award scholarships to survivors the wish to pursue a career in architecture. In addition to meeting all requirements for a general scholarship, an applicant must be an engineering major either be from or attending school in the states of North or South Carolina.

WOHL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Created in memory of Emil and Jan Wohl, who lived their lives to the fullest.
