Cancer for College Profile
Our Mission
Cancer for College (CFC) provides hope and inspiration to those who
have battled cancer by awarding college scholarships to cancer
survivors. In 2006, CFC added amputees to the applicant pool,
regardless if the amputees are cancer survivors.
Our Beginnings
CFC was founded in 1993 by Craig Pollard, a two-time cancer survivor.
Craig fought back from Hodgkin’s disease when he was just 15 years old
and a sophomore at Villa Park High School in Southern California. He
won his second battle at age 19, after receiving a bone marrow
transplant at the City of Hope during his sophomore at the University
of Southern California.
Purpose
“Knowing that I would ultimately return to college after my bone marrow
transplant gave me the strength to keep fighting. It gave me a reason
to live,” says Pollard. To help provide other with this inspiration, he
created Cancer for College.
The Need
When a parent has a sick child in the hospital, saving money for
college is not foremost on their mind. There are many costs that come
hand and hand with cancer treatment. Prescriptions, co-pays,
medications, and hospitalizations are often not covered by health
insurance. An entire course of treatment can be experimental, and
therefore not covered at all. CFC scholarships truly ease a burden on a
family that’s already been through so much.
Funding
CFC relies solely on grants from foundations and corporations,
donations from the community, and fundraiser. The lead fundraising
event for Cancer for College is its annual golf tournament and auction.
Typically held in the fall at a San Diego-area golf course, this event
gathers participants and scholarship recipients past and present (and
their families) for an enjoyable day of golf and fellowship. CFC has
recently added a second annual event in Seattle, Washington. Top
wineries and culinary experts from the Pacific North West showcase
their best for an evening of opportunities, inspirational stories and
delights for the senses. Visit www.cancerforcollege.org for event info
and registration.
