Cancer for College is a 501 (c) 3 charitable foundation based in Southern California with a Pacific Northwest office in Seattle. The Pacific Northwest office is run entirely by volunteers and focuses on the needs of survivors from the states of Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho. Cancer for College was formed in 1993 by Craig Pollard, a two-time Hodgkin’s disease survivor. He created the fund in response to a lack of financial assistance for cancer survivors and their families who are left unable to compete for traditional scholarships and burdened by medical debt. In 2006, Pollard had both feet amputated above the ankle when an aggressive bacterial infection attacked his body, inspiring him to add amputees to the list of eligible scholarship applicants. Cancer for College will grant more than $250,000 in scholarships to 350 applicants this year alone. Since it inception, Cancer for College has awarded $400,000 in scholarships to nearly 500 applicants.
